DEFINING THE AWARD
Awarded to the player who has a great sense of humor, offers team leadership and consistently plays to the best of his/her ability. In many regards this player is the heart of the team. This player creates TEAM CHEMISTRY. Why the Fire Hydrant? As most of us know, the fire hydrant is very symbolic to dogs. In 1989 when I was coaching 8 and 9 year old girls, we had a team in Granada Hills that had immense talent and incredible determination. I believe this team was the best in all of California in it's age bracket. Average margin of victory was 4 goals. One of the things I created to regulate the incredible intensity that this team could generate was the "dog bark." We would all bark at each other for fun. And other than barking the dog's next favorite thing is the Fire Hydrant. Very logical, right? If you can have fun and treat another teammate with respect, that channel of communication can go a long way to establishing Team Chemistry. And thus, the creation of the Fire Hydrant Award, albeit a few years later.
